Yokohama, the second largest city of the country, is one of the most important cities of Japan. It is a major port town, as well as a significant touristic city. Yokohama has hundreds of touristic sights, including parks, Japanese gardens, shopping districts, restaurants, museums, etc.

Yokohama has ten outstanding museums, including art, food, industrial and nautical museums. All of them are very interesting and they all worth a visit. This article will present one museum from each of the previously mentioned categories. Briefly, these are the some of the best museums in Yokohama.

Yokohama Port Museum and Nippon Maru

Yokohama Port Museum is one of the most beautiful museums in Yokohama. Being a nautical museum, it focuses on maritime objects. The most popular sight of the museum is the large ship model exhibition. Nippon Maru was once a sailing ship, but now it is retired and docked in the port. Now the ship is open to the public and the visitors can look around the inside of this huge ship.

Nippon Maru and the Port Museum are located close to each other; the easiest way to approach them is to travel to Minato Mirai or Sakuragicho Stations. They are open between 10.00 and 17.00 every day, except Mondays and the New Year Holidays . The admission to both attractions is 600 Yen.

 

Silk Museum

It is the most important industrial museum in Yokohama. The Silk Museum represents a very significant part of Japan’s economic past, because the silk industry was once very important for Japanese people: they concentrated on both the silk clothes and on the silkworms as well. This museum functions since 1959.

Yokohama Silk Museum is located near Nihon-Odori Station and it has an admission of 500 Yen. It is open from 9.00 until 16.30, but it’s closed on Mondays and on the New Year Holidays.

 

Cup Noodle Museum

This museum worships foods, especially instant noodles. Probably Cup Noodle Museum is Yokohama’s funniest museum, which exhibits cup noodles from all around the world. Visitors even have the opportunity to design their own cup noodles or to make instant noodles, but here reservations are required.

This food museum is located in the area of Minato Mirai and Sakuragicho Stations and it is open between 10.00-18.00 every day except Tuesdays and New Year Holidays. The admission is 500 Yen, but this price does not include the admission for the extra workshops.

 

Yokohama Museum of Art

It is the most important artistic center of the city. Yokohama Museum of Art has seven galleries; three of these is reserved for special exhibitions (there are four special exhibitions per year), three exhibitions display permanent collections and the last gallery displays photographs. This museum is famous for the contemporary art works.

This museum is located in the area of Minato Mirai Station as well, and it is open from 11.00 until 18.00. The museum is closed on Thursdays and on national holidays. The admission is 500 Yen.
